ODOT to hold open house in Corvallis for upcoming bridge projects on U.S. 20
10/02/2007
CORVALLIS — The Oregon Department of Transportation will host an open house in Corvallis on Wednesday, Oct. 3, for a project to repair three bridges and replace four other bridges on U.S. 20 between Corvallis and Newport. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2010.

The open house will focus primarily on repairs to two bridges on U.S. 20 between Philomath and Highway 223 near Wren, and one bridge to be repaired in Corvallis that serves as the exit ramp from eastbound U.S. 20 to northbound Highway 99W through downtown. The design team has recommended a bridge near Blodgett originally scheduled for repairs be reclassified to “no work” after an engineering study found no repairs are needed. The public is invited to learn more about the design work under way and share questions and any concerns with the project team.

The Corvallis open house will be held at the Corvallis-Benton County Library Meeting Room, 645 N.W. Monroe, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The project team held similar open houses Sept. 25 and Sept. 26 in Newport and Toledo to discuss replacing four aging bridges near those communities.

Traffic impacts
Beginning in 2010, road closures may be necessary for the bridge work to enable safe and efficient construction. The exit ramp from U.S. 20 eastbound to Highway 99W northbound in Corvallis could be closed for up to six weeks. The design team is studying “rapid reconstruction” options to replace four bridges on U.S. 20 near Toledo, including closing U.S. 20 several days at a time and detouring traffic on a local road.

The open houses will help ODOT and the project team to include the interests and concerns of the community and highway users as future construction schedules, detour routes and staging sites are identified.

ODOT’s consultant, OBEC Consulting Engineers, is developing preliminary design options for the bridge repair and replacement project. The design options and information about research conducted at the bridge sites will be available for review and comment at the open house.
