| ODOT to close I-5 southbound ramp to Beltline |
|
| 10/16/2007 |
SPRINGFIELD – The Oregon Department of Transportation will close the southbound Interstate 5 ramp to westbound Beltline Highway starting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in order to conduct overnight paving operations.
The ramp closure will last until about 5 a.m. Thursday. During the closure, drivers seeking to access westbound Beltline from I-5 south will be directed past the Gateway District to Interstate 105, west to Delta Highway, and then north to Beltline.
The ramp closure will precede the rerouting of southbound I-5 traffic to a temporary diversion bridge above Game Farm Road and, later in the week, demolishing the southbound bridge over Game Farm. Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, crews will finish paving the approaches to the diversion bridge. Between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. Thursday, project general contractor Mowat Construction will switch I-5 southbound traffic to the diversion route.
Starting at 8 p.m. Friday, crews will close Game Farm Road to begin demolition of the I-5 southbound bridge. During the closure, a subcontractor will bring down the bridge and remove the concrete and rebar debris from the roadway. Mowat will begin construction on a new southbound bridge the following week.
The Game Farm closure could last until very early Monday morning. However, if the demolition crews do not encounter unforeseen problems, the road could be reopened late Sunday afternoon. Signs and barriers on the east side (Springfield) and the west side (Eugene) of the closure point will be posted.
During the closure, Eugene residents in the Crescent Avenue neighborhood wishing to access northwest Springfield should take Coburg Road to Beltline Highway east, and on to Gateway Street. Those in northwest Springfield wishing to access the Crescent Avenue area of Eugene should take Beltline west to Coburg Road.
