Truck crash closes Hwy 58 east of Oakridge
10/17/2007
OAKRIDGE -- A tractor-trailer rig fully engulfed by flames has closed Highway 58 a few miles west of Willamette Pass.

All eastbound and westbound vehicles approaching the scene are being stopped as of 8:40 p.m. Wednesday. As a safety precaution, the Oregon Department of Transportation has closed the highway at milepoint 60. ODOT will allow the vehicle and trailer to burn through the night.

Initial reports indicate the trailer, which is now burning, is loaded with aluminum sheets, which have also started to burn. According to ODOT personnel on scene, the cab and trailer are burning at an intense heat that appears to be melting the pavement.

Depending on the intensity of the fire -- and the effect on the pavement -- the highway is likely to remain closed into Thursday morning or longer.

No further information is available at this time.
