NEWBERG – Congressman Wu is scheduled to join the Oregon Department of Transportation and local officials for a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the Oregon 219 and Springbrook Road Safety Project. The event will be held in Newberg, on Oct. 20 at 10 a.m., in a tent just east of the newly signalized intersection on Springbrook Road. Attendees should park just west of the new intersection near Industrial Avenue and 9th Street.
According to ODOT Project Leader Alan Fox, the project was created to address multiple safety issues in the area. “Local roads crossed the highway at various angles making it more difficult for drivers to safely get on and off Highway 219,” said Fox. “By creating a square, signalized intersection and rerouting some smaller roads through the new intersection, drivers can more safely cross or access the highway.”
Several local roads were rerouted through the new signalized intersection as part of this $6.6 million dollar project. Congressmen Wu and his office directed $2.2 million in additional federal funding for the project.
Construction began in May 2008 and is expected to be completed by the end of October. The project includes creating a new signalized intersection at Oregon 219 and Springbrook Road, building turning lanes on Oregon 219 at Wynooski Road and rerouting traffic from several local streets through the new intersection.
