ODOT plans to remove hazardous tree on U.S. 101 south of the Siuslaw River
10/24/2007
FLORENCE – A large spruce tree just south of the Siuslaw River Bridge that was struck by lightning last Friday afternoon (Oct. 19) has been damaged to the point that it poses a hazard to highway traffic and must be removed.

The spruce, located south of the Siuslaw River between Highway 101 and Old Ferry Road, suffered a huge fracture down its center as a result of being struck by the lightning. The fracture runs for about 100 feet through the middle portion of the tree. At some of the larger fracture locations, viewers can see through the entire tree.

The Oregon Department of Transportation plans to remove the damaged tree during the week of Oct. 29. Motorists should expect minor delays.
