ODOT to collaborate with Benton County cycling community  
Corvallis–In an effort to gain valuable insight and information from the people who would use multi-use connections between downtown Corvallis and Peoria Road, the Oregon Department of Transportation will discuss a draft strategy with the Benton County Public Works Bicycle Advisory Committee.
 
The meeting will be held Thursday, November 12, at 7 p.m., at Benton County Public Works, 360 SW Avery, Corvallis, in the large conference room.
 
Two road construction projects in the OR 34 corridor between downtown and Peoria Road are in the early design phase and both projects would impact bicycle and pedestrian travel.  ODOT wants the input of the Corvallis and Benton County bike and pedestrian communities who travel to the OSU research facilities, the ODFW field office, OSU crew docks, Trysting Tree golf course and other points between downtown Corvallis and Peoria Road.
 
A draft strategy has been developed with input from local residents, as well as bike and pedestrian experts within ODOT.  The strategy includes two options for crossing the Willamette River:
  • Construct a multi-use bridge north of the Harrison Bridge
  • Attach an additional sidewalk to the north side of the Van Buren Bridge in a way that would preserve the historic integrity of the bridge and meet with approval from local and state historic preservation authorities and experts.
Planned changes to the OR 34 corridor 
The Roche-Wolcott project would improve safety by aligning Wolcott Road with Peoria Road.  A frontage road and multi-use path would be built on the north side of OR34.  The frontage road would extend from Wolcott Rd. to the ODFW compound.  The multi-use path would connect the end of the frontage road to the South Bypass intersection.  Design of the $6.385-million project is being finalized by ODOT and Linn County.  Construction is projected for 2011.
 
The second project is the South Bypass project, designed to improve the safety and operation of the Corvallis bypass intersection just east of downtown.  It represents a single phase of a larger solution to the congestion of east Corvallis.  ODOT has $4.2-million available for this project.  The estimated total cost of this phase is $42-million.
