Work to repair OR34 to begin Saturday morning
12/07/2007
WALDPORT – Work to repair Highway 34 about 16 miles east of Waldport is expected to begin early Saturday, with the job expected to take four days barring any unforeseen events.

ODOT closed the highway at milepoint 16.7 at 8:45 p.m. Thursday due to ongoing water damage to the shoulder and subgrade.

Storm-related damage forced ODOT to close the eastbound lane of the highway Tuesday afternoon. Water running under the highway undermined a large section of the subgrade and the eastbound shoulder collapsed. Much of the fill under the eastbound lane has since been washed away.

Until Thursday night, flaggers were allowing single-lane traffic through the damaged area. Further degradation of the fill material under the highway has made even single-lane passage controlled by flaggers unsafe.

ODOT has requested bids to repair this section of the road, with bids due by noon Friday. Repairing the highway will include placing rip rap along the eastbound side of the highway adjacent to the Alsea River and then building up a stone embankment. This work is expected to take about four days. Additional heavy rain or mudslides over the weekend could extend this estimate. Damage more extensive that what is currently visible could also delay the repair project.
