| Highway 34 reopens after storm damage repaired |

| 12/13/2007 |
WALDPORT – An Oregon Department of Transportation contractor has completed the repairs on a section of Highway 34 that washed out Dec. 4 following a storm that pummeled the Oregon Coast with heavy rain and strong winds over a five-day period.
The highway was reopened to two-way traffic at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Storm-related damage forced ODOT to close the eastbound lane of the highway at milepoint 16.7 on Dec. 4. Continuing water damage to this part of the road led the agency to completely close the highway at 8:45 p.m. on Dec. 6 following the development of a large sinkhole encompassing the entire eastbound lane.
Repairing the highway included placing rip rap along the eastbound side of the highway adjacent to the Alsea River and then building up a stone embankment. More than 2,300 tons of rock was used to repair the slope, embankment and highway.
