Icy conditions will greet Monday commuters
12/14/2008
SPRINGFIELD – Icy conditions and slick roads will greet Northwest Oregon commuters Monday morning as temperatures continue to fall following intermittent snowfall overnight Sunday.

ODOT urges drivers to use extreme caution Monday morning following dozens of single-vehicle crashes Sunday due to icy conditions on roads from Florence to Lincoln City and Oakridge to Corvallis. Commuters should be prepared for unusually cold temperatures and slippery driving conditions as an arctic cold front moves south through the Willamette Valley.

Maintenance crews are working overnight to clear and sand highways, bridges and overpasses. Despite those efforts, ODOT expects slippery conditions to persist through Wednesday. Cascade and Coast mountain ranges have received several feet of snow since Friday, and chains are required for most mountain passes.

Drivers throughout Northwest Oregon should be prepared for winter driving conditions. Carry chains and be prepared to install them, including those driving in the southern and mid-Willamette Valley.

Motorists should go to www.tripcheck.com to check the latest road conditions before driving, or call 511.
