ODOT - Don't leave home without a plan - and your chains
12/16/2008
Snow, freezing rain, even colder weather expected to hit western Oregon

The National Weather Service forecasts snow, rain, freezing rain, and then more snow for much of the Oregon Coast and the Willamette Valley beginning Wednesday morning and lasting until early Thursday. The Oregon Department of Transportation warns motorists to prepare for these extreme winter conditions.

“Plan for the worst,” said ODOT Region Manager Jason Tell. “Don’t be fooled if things look good first thing in the morning. Weather will be changing all day. And definitely don’t leave home without your chains. You may need them to get back home.”

ODOT maintenance crews are prepared to handle the winter conditions with additional shifts scheduled throughout the storm period. Our snowplows, sand spreaders and chemical de-icer trucks have been fighting icy highway conditions since last Sunday.

ODOT asks motorists to use special care on bridges, on-ramps, off-ramps and transition ramps; they tend to ice up more quickly because they’re more exposed.
