ODOT crews at work on coastal routes
12/22/2008
Weather will affect when routes can open

ASTORIA – ODOT crews will continue to work cutting trees on coastal routes this morning. Maintenance managers are hopeful that some of the routes can be cleared today, but it is largely dependent on how much more snow or freezing rain falls.

ODOT crews are responding to fallen trees on U.S. 30 at mile point 74, about 12 miles west of Clatskanie. Low hanging utility lines may cause difficulties for high profile vehicles at mile point 94, about three miles east of Astoria.

Current closures include U.S. 26, Oregon 6, Oregon 18, Oregon 22 and Oregon 130.  Crews’ highest priorities are keeping U.S. 30 open, and then restoring traffic flow on U.S. 26, Oregon 6 and Oregon 18. Crews are cutting trees on those highways now, but there are a lot of downed trees and the potential for more, depending on the weather.

Trees loaded with weight from ice and snow are more difficult and time consuming to clear. As they are cut, the weight can cause the tree to snap or recoil unpredictably.

Additional snowfall or freezing rain may cause more trees to fall, so even if the road is clear, drivers should be prepared for delays by following winter driving tips:
