Coastal highway status update

Clean up almost complete on U.S. 26, but falling trees will keep highway closed

ODOT reports that U.S. 26, Oregon 6, Oregon 18 and Oregon 22 will likely stay closed overnight.

ODOT crews have cleared earlier trouble spots on U.S. 30, which remains open from Portland to the coast. Snow accumulation on trees is causing them to sag over the roadway and narrow the travel lanes. Pictures from this morning are available at http://www.flickr.com/photos/oregondot/.

Crews continue to remove trees and plow U.S. 26, which is currently closed. Most fallen trees have been cut, and crews are working to clear and plow the road. Managers believe clean up will be complete this evening, but crews report continuously falling trees and limbs. For safety reasons, ODOT will keep the road closed overnight to all but emergency service vehicles. Managers will reevaluate in the morning.

Crews continue to work on Oregon 6, but staff reports more trees and limbs continuing to fall. Oregon 6 will not open tonight.

Oregon 18 and 22 will also likely stay closed overnight. Ice accumulation on both highways is slowing tree removal. Trees loaded with weight from ice and snow are more difficult and time consuming to clear. As they are cut, the weight can cause the tree to snap or recoil unpredictably. Utility lines down with fallen trees are further slowing tree removal on Oregon 22.

Additional snowfall, wind or freezing rain may cause more trees or limbs to fall, so even if a road is cleared, drivers should be prepared for delays by following winter driving tips.
