Truck fire north of Eugene to keep I-5 southbound closed for several hours
04/20/2008
SPRINGFIELD – Both northbound lanes of Interstate 5 reopened at about 9:40 p.m. Sunday after fire crews extinguished a fully engulfed semi and trailer fire that sent thick, black smoke across the northbound and southbound lanes of I-5 just north of Beltline Highway in Eugene.

The southbound lanes of the interstate will remain closed at milepost 196 for several more hours.

A detour for southbound I-5 traffic is now in operation. Southbound vehicles are being detoured at the I-5/Coburg exit (milepost 199), sent south on Coburg Road, south on Game Farm Road, and then led to the I-5/Beltline interchange (milepost 195).

The truck fire started at approximately 8:30 p.m. after the southbound freight truck struck a concrete barrier at the I-5 diversion bridge above Game Farm. No injuries have been reported.

The crash ruptured the fuel tanks on the truck, and a large quantity of diesel has spilled.

Due to heavy, black smoke blowing west to east, both northbound and southbound I-5 at milepost 196 were closed for about an hour. Northbound lanes were reopened at approximately 9:40 p.m. Hazardous materials responders are on their way to the scene to contain and clean up the fuel spill.
