UPDATE: Truck crash closes I-5 north in Eugene
05/04/2008
SPRINGFIELD – Northbound lanes of Interstate 5 will remain closed for approximately two more hours following the crash of a semi truck hauling a trailer full of bread dough into the Centennial Boulevard overpass of I-5 at milepost 193 in Eugene-Springfield at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

The truck struck the right-hand concrete barrier just south of the overpass, continued north for approximately 100 feet and then collided with one of the vertical structural columns supporting the overpass.

Due to the damaged support column, ODOT has closed the Centennial overpass to all local traffic. An ODOT bridge engineer will inspect the damage overnight and determine whether the overpass is safe to reopen. Monday morning commuters should plan on taking alternate routes.

The crash also caused the truck to spill about 200 gallons of diesel fuel onto the freeway.

Oregon State Police, ODOT incident responders, a hazardous materials crew and tow trucks are on scene. Emergency crews hope to clear the wreckage and doughy debris from at least one lane of the freeway by midnight.
