| Southbound traffic will move onto new McKenzie River Bridge |

| 05/05/2008 |
SPRINGFIELD –- Contractors for the Oregon Department of Transportation will switch Interstate 5 traffic to the new southbound bridge over the McKenzie Rive beginning at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 8. The traffic shift is weather dependent and will be complete before 6 a.m. Friday.
The switch to the new bridge is not expected to create delays for southbound I-5 drivers.
The traffic switch will allow workers to remove the temporary I-5 southbound bridge (currently in use) and build a new, wider northbound bridge over the McKenzie River. Once the southbound traffic has been switched, crews will wait one or two weeks and then shift northbound I-5 traffic to one side of the new bridge. The new southbound bridge is wide enough to accommodate four lanes of traffic. No speed or weight restrictions will be required.
This work is part of the Oregon Department of Transportation’s I-5 McKenzie River to Goshen Grade project. Hamilton Construction, based in Springfield, is the lead contractor. Hamilton is replacing five bridges and repairing two more to ensure the safe and free flow of traffic along the I-5 corridor. Construction work on the $60 million project will be finished by fall 2009.
ODOT contractor Hamilton Construction has established a local hotline phone number at (541) 743-9100 to answer questions about the upcoming traffic changes and other project details.
