| Northbound I-5 traffic to shift to new alignment over the McKenzie River |
|
| 05/14/2008 |
SPRINGFIELD –- An Oregon Department of Transportation contractor will switch northbound Interstate 5 traffic to a new alignment over the McKenzie River beginning at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 15. The traffic switch will be completed no later than 6 a.m. Friday.
I-5 southbound traffic was switched to the new southbound bridge over the river last week. Following the switch scheduled to begin Thursday evening, the new southbound bridge, which is wide enough to accommodate four lanes of traffic, will have two lanes dedicated to northbound vehicles and two lanes dedicated to southbound vehicles. The traffic switch will allow workers to remove the temporary I-5 southbound bridge and build a new, wider northbound bridge in its place over the McKenzie River. Both the temporary bridge and the existing northbound bridge will be removed.
This work is part of the Oregon Department of Transportation’s I-5 McKenzie River to Goshen Grade project. Springfield-based Hamilton Construction is the lead contractor. Hamilton is replacing five bridges and repairing two more to ensure the safe and free flow of traffic along the I-5 corridor. Construction work on the $60 million project will be finished by fall 2009.
Hamilton Construction has established a local hotline phone number at (541) 743-9100 to answer questions about the upcoming traffic changes and other project details.
