ODOT to hold open house, safety fair in Florence

FLORENCE –- The Oregon Department of Transportation will hold an open house and host a safety fair in conjunction with the Rhododendron Festival in Florence on May 16 and May 17.
 
The open house will provide information on the upcoming Siuslaw River Bridge improvement project.  ODOT staff will be on hand to answer questions, take comments and suggestions, and explain the project, which consists of upgrading the electrical and mechanical elements of the draw bridge. Other components of the project include restoring the draw bridge operator buildings, repairing bridge columns and painting the bascule span. The $5.3 million project will begin in early 2009.
 
The safety fair includes youth-oriented safety exhibits and demonstrations. Children are encouraged to bring their bicycles and helmets to participate in the activities. Those attending will be eligible to enter a free drawing for bicycle helmets and child booster seats.
 
The two-day event will also include cultural exhibits where local and ODOT historians will be telling stories of days past. ODOT staff will set up a hands-on archeological excavation on Saturday, and kids are eligible to win an archeological dig kit.
 
The open house, safety fair and cultural exhibits will be held at Florence City Hall, 250 Highway 101. On Friday, the event will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. At 8:30 p.m., ODOT will light an illumination display at the northwest end of the Siuslaw River Bridge. Saturday the outdoor safety fair and archeological dig will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The indoor safety fair and project open house will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. At 8:30 p.m., ODOT will light an illumination display at the northwest end of the Siuslaw River Bridge.
