| ODOT to hold open house in Gleneden Beach to discuss Millport Slough Bridge replacement |

| 05/16/2008 |
LINCOLN CITY –- The Oregon Department of Transportation will hold a community open house from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, to discuss the various aspects of a project that will replace the U.S. 101 Millport Slough Bridge beginning in the summer of 2009.
ODOT project staff will be on hand during the informal drop-in meeting to answer questions, address concerns and take public comments. The open house will be held at the Gleneden Beach Community Center, 110 Azalea St.
The project will replace the wood-supported structure over Millport Slough on Highway 101 at milepoint 120.8, just south of Lincoln City. The bridge is constructed of old wood columns that are rotting, and the bridge is too narrow for modern safety standards.
Traffic studies of the area indicate the highway will need to be four lanes wide within 20 years to meet capacity requirements. With that in mind, the new bridge will be constructed to handle four lanes of traffic. ODOT plans to build the first two lanes of the four-lane bridge and then route traffic to the new lanes while the other half of the bridge is built. The highway will be expanded to four lanes in the future as funds become available.
The bridge spans Siletz Bay, a critical tidal estuary, and a National Wildlife Refuge. ODOT, in consultation with state, federal and tribal environmental agencies, designed the new bridge to minimize impacts on wetlands and also improve fish passage.
