MCKENZIEBRIDGE–The west end of McKenzie Pass Highway(OR 242) remains under several feet of snow that will not be removed until May 23 or May 24.
The Oregon Department of Transportation had hoped to clear one lane of the highway from Sisters west to the snow gate at Alder Springs (the gate is about 11 miles east of Highway 126) by Friday afternoon to allow pedestrians and bicyclists to ride and walk the scenic route. ODOT had hoped to open the entire highway on Saturday morning to non-motorized travel.
A crew operating a snow blower encountered more snow than anticipated on the west side of the McKenziePassand will not be able to finish clearing the remainder of the route until the middle of next week.
ODOT crews report there is snow up to four feet deep covering about 3.5 miles of the highway above Alder Springs. Those accessing the highway from the east side near Sisters can visit the Dee Wright Observatory and continue west until meeting the unplowed section of road.
The highway remains closed to motorized traffic.
