Construction work begins on three I-5 bridges between Creswell and Cottage Grove
06/02/2008
SPRINGFIELD — Initial site clearing work and construction sign installation is underway on a $17 million project to replace one overpass and two bridges along Interstate 5 between Goshen and Cottage Grove.

The project includes the replacement of the Saginaw Road overpass at milepoint 176, about 1.5 miles north of Cottage Grove; replacement of the Brown Creek Bridge at milepoint 178 near the Gettings Creek Rest Area; and the replacement of the Camas Swale Bridge at milepoint 185.5, about 2.5 miles south of Goshen.

With the exception of the Saginaw Road overpass replacement, the project will pose only limited impacts to local and freeway traffic. During construction, ODOT will keep two lanes open in each direction on I-5 during peak traffic hours.

  • Saginaw Road overpass at I-5: Construction will begin on the Saginaw Road overpass at I-5 (exit 176) in late summer. In November, ODOT will close the overpass in order to demolish and replace the structure. Once the existing structure is removed, onramps and offramps for exit 176 will remain open to vehicles needing to access Sears Road and northbound I-5. The ramps will also be open for I-5 southbound vehicles looking to access Saginaw Road East and Highway 99. I-5 traffic will be briefly affected during nighttime bridge demolition work. ODOT plans to reopen the new overpass bridge in summer 2009.
  • Brown Creek Bridge: The southbound I-5 Gettings Creek Rest Area will be closed in spring 2009 in order to replace the Brown Creek Bridge immediately to the south. The rest area is scheduled to reopen in December 2009.
  • Camas Swale Bridge: I-5 will remain open to traffic throughout construction.

Brown Creek Bridge and Camas Swale Bridge both cross valuable wetlands. The Oregon Department of Transportation will maintain strict environmental standards during construction to protect the wetlands. By managing storm water runoff, ODOT will limit soil erosion and pollutants that can enter the wetlands.

ODOT awarded the $17 million bridge replacement contract to M.J. Hughes Construction Co. It is funded by the Oregon Transportation Investment Act.
