Multi-use Willamette River crossing (Corvallis)
Overview
Bicycling is an important form of travel in Corvallis. According to survey data, approximately 22% of Corvallis residents commute regularly by bike and 8% commute regularly by walking. The Van Buren Avenue and Harrison Boulevard bridges are extremely important east-west connections for bicyclists accessing OSU facilities and Peoria Road.

Multi-use access across the river is limited to the 5’ sidewalk on the Van Buren Bridge. Westbound multi-use traffic must use the sub-standard shoulder on the Harrison Bridge, though some bicyclists cross back on the Van Buren Bridge, which requires them to travel counter to traffic on the Van Buren Bridge approach.

Multi-modal access across the Willamette River and a multi-use path connecting recreational and commuter traffic to Peoria Road is part of a larger solution needed to ease congestion in east Corvallis. Addressing congestion throughout the area requires an integrated approach with multiple components.

Public Involvement
Throughout the development of the project leading up to the conclusion that multi-modal access must be part of a larger solution to ease east Corvallis congestion, ODOT has gathered public opinion on the problem and potential solutions.
