Bridge projects on U.S. 30 finished early
ASTORIA–Starting this month motorists are driving across four stronger and safer bridges along U.S. 30 in Columbia and Clatsop counties. In just six months, a contractor for the Oregon Department of Transportation completed the bridge improvement projects located between St. Helens and Astoria.
Built between 1929 and 1958, the four bridges needed to be strengthened to improve safety and mobility. The project consisted of strengthening the existing spans and concrete decks to support heavy loads, and meet the expected traffic demands for at least the next 20 years. The contractor, Mowat Construction Company, completed the work six months earlier than planned.
The four bridges are:
* Tide Creek, milepost 36.5, between St. Helens and Rainier.
* Lost Creek, milepost 55.3, between Rainier and Clatskanie.
* Gnat Creek, milepost 77.2, 3 miles east of Knappa.
* Big Creek, milepost 82.5, 13 miles east of Astoria.
The $3.7 million project is funded by the Oregon Transportation Investment Act III.

These projects are part of the Oregon Department of Transportation’s 10-year, $3 billion Oregon Transportation Investment Act. OTIA funds are repairing or replacing hundreds of bridges, paving and maintaining city and county roads, improving and expanding interchanges, adding new capacity to Oregon’s highway system and removing freight bottlenecks statewide. Based on 2008 dollars, about 14 family-wage jobs are sustained for every $1 million spent on transportation construction in Oregon. . Each year during the remainder of the OTIA program, we estimate that construction projects will sustain an average of 4,100 family-wage jobs.
