US 20 Pioneer Mountain-Eddyville to receive thousands of wetlands plants
CORVALLIS— A subcontractor working on the US 20, Pioneer Mountain-Eddyville road and bridge construction project will plant more than 10,000 plants next week on acreage set aside as part of the mitigation required to offset the small amount of wetlands impacted by the project.
On Tuesday, February 2 and Wednesday, February 3, various species of wetland plants, shrubs, willows and conifers will be planted near the east end of the project by the subcontractor, Henderson Land Services.
“We have created a five-and-a-half acre area along the project corridor that is being developed as a potential wetland,” said Assistant Project Manager Eric Knapp. “That is greater in size than the wetlands affected by the road and bridge construction,” he said.
Next week’s planting is the second phase of planting in the potential wetland. Phase One occurred last year and the 6,000 plants planted at that time are now being monitored.
“Before created wetlands can be designated as successful and functional, the plants, soil and hydrology must be monitored and the site’s success criteria met. This can take up to five years,” explained ODOT biologist, Nick Testa. “We are already monitoring Phase One and will begin monitoring Phase Two next year,” he said.
The development of the potential wetland represents an investment of $578,000 in wetland mitigation. After the planting of Phase Two, the subcontractor will turn its attention to planting riparian buffers along streams and tributaries throughout the project boundaries.
The US 20, Pioneer Mountain-Eddyville project is a $210 million project that will create six miles of new road and build ten new bridges while replacing a ten mile section of US 20 in Lincoln County. It is scheduled for completion in 2011. The contractor is Yaquina River Constructors.
