Crews blasting near U.S. 20 near Eddyville may create traffic delays between Philomath and Newport
EDDYVILLE—The contractor working on U.S. 20 near Eddyville plans to detonate a small blast adjacent to the highway that may create traffic delays Thursday, April 1 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
“Normally, the blasting will cause no more than a 20-minute delay for travelers,” said ODOT Project Manager, Joe Squire. “However, due to the steep slope above the highway, the close proximity of the hillside to the highway and the instability of the material, it’s hard to predict exactly how much material will come down with each blast,” he said.
“If blasting unexpectedly creates the chance for lengthy traffic delays, we will activate variable message signs at key locations to alert drivers that the highway is closed and to consider alternate routes,” he said.
The signs, which normally advise drivers
,
“Construction ahead. Expect Delays,” are located at Toledo and near Wren Hill Estates, west of Philomath. Eastbound drivers at Toledo can choose to proceed eastward on Oregon 180 (Eddyville-Blodget Highway). Westbound drivers can return to Philomath and take Oregon 34 (Alsea Highway between Philomath and Waldport). Trucks should contact ODOT's Over Dimension Permit Unit at (503) 373-0000 for alternate routes.
Blasting will occur periodically throughout the spring construction season, Squire said. The contractor is planning blasts during the next several weeks.
