Contractor chosen for I-5/Beltline and Gateway project

SPRINGFIELD—The Oregon Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the City of Springfield, has selected a local firm to construct the next phase of improvements at Interstate 5 and Beltline Highway and widen Gateway Street in Springfield.

Pacific Excavation, Incorporated, based in Eugene, is expected to begin construction later this spring on the $11.5-million construction project with a completion date of fall of 2011.

The ODOT/Springfield joint project will:
  • Add a new northbound I-5 off-ramp to eastbound Beltline;
  • Construct a new northbound I-5 on-ramp from westbound Beltline;
  • Widen Beltline between I-5 and Hutton Street;
  • Widen Gateway Street between Kruse Way and International Way;
  • Construct a new sound wall on the west side of I-5 between Harlow Rd and Willakenzie Rd.
“Motorists should be prepared for construction activity to slow their travel in the Gateway Area this spring and summer,” said ODOT Project Manager, Chuck Lemos.  “Most of the construction will take place at night and no business will lose access, but temporary traffic revisions may cause slow downs at times between Kruse Way and International Way and near the Beltline/Gateway intersection during this construction season,” he said.

Know Before You Go
Motorists will have several options for getting up-to-date travel information on the project.  ODOT’s Web site, www.tripcheck.com will list any impacts to the I-5/Beltline interchange.

Point-2-Point Solutions will offer the latest road delay information and any bike route impacts for the Gateway area on www.keepusmoving.info.

Watch for traffic alerts this spring and summer with the theme of “Better Ways to Gateway,” in an effort to keep motorists advised of several construction projects in the area.

More improvements to come
The I-5/Beltline Highway improvements are the second phase of improvements to make the interchange safer and more efficient.  The first phase included the Beltline flyover and the I-5 Bike and Pedestrian Bridge.  Future phases, which are partially funded, include additional ramps from I-5 southbound to both eastbound and westbound Beltline; a new Beltline Bridge over I-5; a new bicycle/pedestrian path and a new sound wall on the south side of Beltline, east of Coburg Road.
