Complete closure of US 20 near Eddyville planned May 14-17

EDDYVILLE—The Oregon Department of Transportation will close US 20, near Eddyville, to all traffic from 6:00 p.m. Friday, May 14 until 6:00 a.m. Monday, May 17 to allow a contractor to perform several construction blasts in connection with the U.S. 20:  Pioneer Mountain to Eddyville project.

The closures will prevent all eastbound and westbound travel along US 20 between mileposts 23 and 25.  Motorists should plan on taking alternate routes during those hours.  ODOT advises motorists in passenger and recreation vehicles or vehicles towing trailers to plan on using OR 34 between Philomath and Waldport.

There are truck restrictions on OR 34 and freight haulers are encouraged to call ODOT Permits at 503-373-0000.  The suggested truck detour is I-5 or OR99W to OR 22 to OR 18 to US101.

Halibut fishing plans should be made in advance
The highway closure coincides with the opening of the Oregon Sport Halibut season and members of the fishing community should plan accordingly.

ODOT has worked closely with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to get advance word to sport fishers and charter boat operators.

“We recommend that fishers arrive on the coast ahead of the Friday evening closure,” said ODOT Project Manager Joe Squire.  “If they can’t arrive then, they should allow extra travel time to make connections with their outfitters or fishing partners,” he said.

The OR 34 detour adds approximately 40 minutes to the trip time from Corvallis to Newport.

Emergency services will be available
ODOT has worked closely with other public agencies to ensure that emergency services will be available to residents east and west of the closure.  Law enforcement agencies, fire fighters, and ambulance providers are collaborating to staff both sides of the closure and will be capable of responding to any emergencies.

ODOT has also worked closely with area employers and the trucking industry to make sure the closure information is known.

Variable message signs will be located at strategic locations to inform and remind motorists of closures

The project will make US 20 travel safer and more efficient
The $215-million, U.S. 20:  Pioneer Mountain to Eddyville project is  creating six miles of new road, building ten new bridges and bypassing a 10 mile section of old U.S. 20.  It is scheduled for completion in late 2011.
