| ODOT to re-time signals on Mission Street |
|
| 07/26/2011 |
Salem- Oregon Department of Transportation traffic engineers will re-time the traffic signal lights on Mission Street (OR99E Bus/OR22) between 17th Street and I-5 in Salem effective at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 24. The re-timing is part of a system upgrade that should improve overall travel efficiency in that busy corridor. Motorists will see posted signs warning of the signal time change.
The traffic lights affected will be at 17th Street, 22nd Street, 25th Street, Airport/Turner Road and Hawthorne Avenue. While most motorists may only notice subtle differences to the signal timing, some changes may be more noticeable depending on the traffic movements around the intersections.
"Our goal is to achieve positive changes for motorists traveling through this corridor by improving mobility. The changes include installing new timing software that is more adaptable to present conditions in the field," said Craig Black, ODOT's signal operations engineer for Region 2 in Salem. "In addition, with the overall timing software upgrade, we will be employing new timing features that should better respond to traffic volume changes as they occur on the street."
A daily average of 43,000 motorists use that stretch of Mission Street making it one of the busiest non-interstate sections of state highway in Region 2, which includes nine counties and most of the Willamette Valley. That stretch of Mission Street also includes four sites that are in the top 10 percent in the Region for serious crashes. In an effort to help reduce crashes, besides the timing changes, some modifications to the traffic signals will occur later this year to help improve visibility to the signal displays.
During the first few weeks of the re-timing, traffic engineers will be collecting date that will help them measure and monitor the effectiveness of the timing changes.
