ODOT to close one lane on Highway 131; developing long term repair for slide area

TILLAMOOK— The Oregon Department of Transportation will be limiting traffic to one lane on the Old Netarts Highway (Highway 131) just West of Happy Camp Road as it develops a long term repair for a 250-foot section of road that continues to crack and slump.

The lane closure should begin by the end of the day on Tuesday, June 21. The eastbound lane will be closed with drivers yielding to the opposing direction of traffic. Westbound drivers will have the right of way. Motorists will notice signage warning them of "One Lane Road Ahead," "Yield Ahead," and "Yield to Oncoming Traffic." Cones and barriers will be used to set off traffic from the slide area.

Maintenance crews have been paving and patching over the roadway almost on a weekly basis so two-way traffic could safely use the road. However, ODOT engineers and geologists now prefer to limit travel on the damaged lane of traffic rather than adding more heavy asphalt to the road.
ODOT geologists and engineers have been drilling, surveying and gathering information for a potential long term repair which could begin in late July or early August. Design for a potential repair has already begun and the agency hopes to have a plan for repairs approved by mid-July. The completion date could be the end of September or early October, well before the winter rains. Geologists have determined that excess subsurface water is likely causing a slow-moving slide to accelerate.

Geologists and engineers have carefully studied the site. They believe that the slide is moving slowly but want the road repaired as soon as possible. Keeping the road open, and ensuring the safety of traveling motorists and neighboring homeowners, is the highest priority for ODOT.

Motorists should proceed with caution through the area and expect minor delays.
