Bridge work to resume at Volmer and Johnson Creeks on U.S. 26
SEASIDE—Contract crews working for the Oregon Department of Transportation will resume work on bridges at Volmer Creek (milepost 2.1) and Johnson Creek (milepost 3.4) on U.S. 26 starting at 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 10. Traffic delays are expected as flaggers control a single lane of traffic.
The "rapid bridge replacements" will continue for four weeks with a single lane open 24 hours per day during weekdays. The goal each week is to have the 2-lane traffic restored for weekends by 3 p.m. on Fridays. The construction is weather-dependent and motorists can expect delays up to 20 minutes.
"We are doing our very best to limit any delays and inconveniences to motorists by using rapid bridge replacement techniques and not closing lanes to weekend traffic," said Paul Christiansen, Project Manager in Astoria. "However, this project is using unusual construction techniques and there are some unknowns, including weather variability, that make it possible that we don’t get the all lanes open by 3 p.m. on Friday."
ODOT contract crews began work on the bridges earlier this year and completed as much work as they could. However, the actual bridge replacements had to wait until now due to environmental regulations that require the work during the in-water work period, which begins on July 1.
"For most motorists who travel during the week, this will look like a typical construction work zone with flaggers," Christiansen said. "While delays could be up to 20 minutes, I would expect delays to be quite a bit less than 20 minutes. We are anticipating heavy traffic and potentially longer delays on Fridays, though."
