Road project cancelled by NWACT

NWACT votes to cancel the U.S. 101
Old Condor Road to Hebo passing lane project

TILLAMOOK— The Northwest Area Commission on Transportation (NWACT) on May 5 unanimously voted to cancel the U.S. 101: Old Condor Road to Hebo passing lane project because of declining revenue forecasts for highway improvement projects. The Oregon Transportation Commission officially approved the project cancellation at its regular meeting on July 20.

The action was required because of a significant decline in revenue for projects programmed by the Oregon Department of Transportation and funded by the Federal Surface Transportation Budget. Currently there is not sufficient funding to pay for all forecasted work throughout the state.
The NWACT prioritized its modernization projects as follows: 1) OR6 at Wilson River Loop; 2) U.S. 101 at Manzanita Curve; 3) U.S. 101: Camp Rilea to Surf Pines; and 4) US101: Old Condor Rd to Hebo. In a unanimous vote, the NWACT voted to shelve the U.S. 101: Old Condor Rd to Hebo passing lane project in order to fully fund the other three.

The cancelled project would have added passing lanes and widened the Nestucca River Bridge located between Hebo and Coverdale in Tillamook County. While this project would have relieved congestion caused by slow moving vehicles, the other three projects have serious safety issues that need to be addressed.

The NWACT is comprised primarily of elected officials from Clatsop and Tillamook counties. An ACT is an advisory body chartered by the Oregon Transportation Commission. ACTs address all aspects of transportation (surface, marine, air, and transportation safety) with primary focus on the state transportation system. ACTs consider regional and local transportation issues if they affect the state system, and work with other local organizations dealing with transportation-related issues.
