Lane County tunnel work to result in lane restrictions and delays
SPRINGFIELD-The Oregon Department of Transportation will begin a project soon to stabilize the east and west portals of the Knowles Creek Tunnel on OR 126, approximately 5 miles east of Mapleton.
Beginning Monday, August 30 and continuing until early October, motorists will experience single lane restrictions with flaggers controlling traffic on both sides of the tunnel, between mileposts 19.54 and 19.81. Work is scheduled Monday through Friday, approximately 7:00a.m. to 5:00p.m.
There will be no work scheduled for the Labor Day weekend of Friday, September 3-Monday, September 6.
During the first week of the project, motorists can also expect temporary traffic holds up to 20 minutes and related delays when traffic is cleared. These holds are required to protect traffic from loose rock debris that is expected to fall on the roadway after it is dislodged from the slope above.
The $567,385 project will remove loose rocks and soil above the tunnel portals. In addition, rock reinforcement bolts will be installed and voids above and behind the tunnel liner will be filled.
The project will be completed this fall.
