Work begins on OR 58 rockfall screen placement
20-minute delays planned.  No 2-hour closures necessary

SPRINGFIELD-The Oregon Department of Transportation and its contractor, JAL Construction, have begun work to place a rockfall screen adjacent to OR 58, immediately west of the Salt Creek Tunnel at milepost 56.1.  The screen will cover a rockfall area on the north side of the highway.

Beginning today and lasting until mid-October, motorists will experience a single lane of travel with flaggers controlling traffic in alternating directions through the construction zone.  Motorists should expect up to 20-minute delays.

Electronic message signs will remind and alert motorists to the project and the delays.  Those signs will be placed east and west of the construction zone.

Once placed, the rockfall screen will increase safety by reducing the amount of rocks and debris that land on the roadway.

Originally, preliminary plans for the project included the possibility of two hour complete closures of the roadway but final plans eliminated the need for the complete closures.

“This should be great news for motorists, especially hunters since this project coincides with the opening of the general rifle deer season,” said Steve Templin, ODOT Assistant Project Manager.

“We were able to work with the contractor and reach an agreement that eliminated the possibility of regularly scheduled, two-hour closures,” he said.

There will be no lane restrictions on weekends between 7 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Monday.
