New ramp to open at Kuebler Interchange

SALEM – The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) will open a new northbound ramp from Kuebler Boulevard to I-5 at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 13.  The new ramp will eliminate the left turn that motorists traveling westbound are taking to go northbound on I-5.

The change should ease traffic through the busy interchange and make it easier for trucks to go northbound on I-5.  Motorists traveling eastbound on Kuebler who are going northbound on I-5 will continue making the same right turn on to the ramp that loops around on to I-5.

The $2.7 million project is funded with OTIA Industrial Funds.

ODOT is currently planning another significant upgrade to the Kuebler Interchange funded under the Jobs in Transportation Act (JTA) program.   The future upgrade will add a westbound to southbound loop ramp and modify an eastbound to southbound ramp and the existing southbound ramp.

The interchange is a major east-west corridor for the City of Salem, and a critical link to I-5.  The Mill Creek Corporate Center, located northeast of the interchange, is a partnership between the State of Oregon and the City to create a major employment center.  The addition of the new northbound ramp to I-5, and the planned upgrade, will help support the additional vehicle and freight traffic that will be generated by redevelopment.

The project design is scheduled to be completed by late 2012 with construction planned to start in the spring of 2013.  The estimated cost is $18.6 million.
