     New I-5 northbound exit to eastbound Beltline opens early

SPRINGFIELD — Construction of the new I-5 northbound exit to eastbound Beltline was completed Sunday, October 10, 2010, more than 24 hours ahead of schedule.

Motorists on northbound I-5 will now use the far right lane to use exit 195A to eastbound OR 569 (Randy Papé Beltline).

Temporary signs indicating the new exit will be replaced with new, permanent signs later this week.

The new off-ramp will be better aligned with other interchange improvements and provide a more efficient and safer access to eastbound Beltline.

 “Still to be added will be a signal where the exit ends at Beltline,” said ODOT Project Manager Chuck Lemos.  “The signal will control eastbound travel on Beltline and allow motorists exiting I-5 to turn east without the challenge of cross-traffic,” said Lemos.

Another priority is the final configuration of the two left-turn lanes from eastbound Beltline to southbound Gateway Street.

Construction activity will continue during the fall and winter with:
  • Installation of new lighting and signals
  • Landscaping and erosion control planting
  • Storm drain construction

“Because the weather window for paving has closed for the season, motorists should expect to be driving on unfinished asphalt until next spring,” said Lemos.

The improvements are part of the $11.5 million joint ODOT and City of Springfield project that will:
  • Add a new northbound I-5 off-ramp to eastbound Beltline;
  • Construct a new northbound I-5 on-ramp from westbound Beltline;
  • Widen Beltline between I-5 and Hutton Street;
  • Widen Gateway Street between Kruse Way and International Way;
  • Construct a new sound wall on the west side of I-5 between Harlow Rd and Willakenzie Rd.

The project is scheduled for completion in July, 2011.
