Franklin Boulevard on-ramp to Interstate 5 reopens this week

SPRINGFIELD — Contractors for the Oregon Department of Transportation plan to reopen the southbound Interstate 5 on-ramp from Franklin Boulevard by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, weather permitting.

ODOT closed the ramp in June to realign it with the new I-5 southbound Willamette River Bridge scheduled to open to traffic late in 2011. Drivers using the new on-ramp will also notice:
  • Improved lighting.
  • A new retaining wall to support the raised roadway.
  • A sound wall to decrease the noise of I-5 traffic to the adjacent neighborhood.

As work on the new I-5 Willamette River Bridge continues, brief temporary closures of this freeway on-ramp may be needed.

The OTIA III State Bridge Delivery Program is part of the Oregon Department of Transportation's 10-year, $3 billion Oregon Transportation Investment Act. OTIA funds are repairing or replacing hundreds of bridges, paving and maintaining city and county roads, improving and expanding interchanges, adding new capacity to Oregon's highway system, and removing freight bottlenecks statewide. Based on recent estimates, about 14 family-wage jobs are sustained for every $1 million spent on transportation construction in Oregon. Through 2009, the bridge program has sustained more than 16,000 jobs. Overall, the 10-year program will sustain an annual average of approximately 2,300 jobs.
