U.S. 20: Pioneer Mountain Loop Road - Yaquina River
Overview
Located on U.S. 20 from mile post 14.53 to mile post 16.29, this project will realign the curves near Sam’s Creek Road and repave the existing highway between Sam’s Creek Road and Pioneer Mountain Loop Road to make the highway compatible with the improvements of the U.S. 20: Pioneer Mountain – Eddyville project.

Straightening the curves is needed to open U.S. 20 for interstate freight. The highway will be shifted north because the existing alignment runs parallel to the creek throughout the project limits. Straightening the curves along the existing alignment would create environmental damage to the creek. Also, a new, fish-friendly, bridge over Simpson Creek will be built to replace the existing culvert.

Funding
Estimated construction cost is $8.5 million. This project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

Construction
Construction is expected to begin spring 2010 and completed fall 2011.

Single lane, 24 hour flagging, is expected through the first year of construction and paving. One 72-hour closure of the highway is anticipated during the last year of construction to tie in the new alignment with the existing highway. A signed detour will be in place during closures.

During some single lane closures freight will be limited to annual permit widths. Single trip permit loads will need to check with ODOT’s Over-Dimension Permit Unit at (503) 373-0000.
