Drivers Education

Summer may be the perfect time to enroll your teen in a Driver’s Education course.  Driving is a complex task requiring critical thinking, quick reflexes and good decision making skills. When it comes to learning to drive you can never be over educated or have too much training and experience.

While drivers’ education is not required in order to get your license anyone who has tried to teach their own child to drive can tell you it may be much easier and cheaper in the long run to pay for a good driver’s education course.  There are lots of resources available for parents and students who want to learn to drive.  Please visit our website at Transportation Safety Division and look at the multitude of resources available.  The web site is http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/TS/drivers_ed.shtml

Some basic driving tips include:
  • Buckle Up on every trip
  • Never mix alcohol and driving
  • Know the laws and follow them
  • Driving is a task in and of itself, not a time to multi-task

Learning to drive takes time and patience.  Don’t let your teen even take the driving test before you feel they are ready.  Driving is serious business and safety must always come first.  Remember, the life you save could be your own or the life of your child.  Have a safe and fun summer.
