Weekly Construction Update
This week's Construction Update (may need to scroll down)
Project Location
This project is located at the junction of Oregon 22 (North Santiam Highway) and Cascade Highway in Marion County. The project starts at milepost 11.83 and goes to milepost 13.95
Purpose and Need
The current Sublimity Interchange poses safety and operational issues in that both the eastbound and westbound entrance ramps to Oregon 22 terminate in stop signs. As a result, motorists are forced to quickly accelerate to highway speed from a complete stop. Eastbound travelers must enter Oregon 22 from a stop and accelerate uphill. Traffic on Oregon 22 is traveling at 55 mph or more, and during peak periods offers few breaks. Eastbound traffic enters on the top of a knoll, with limited sight distance. Significant numbers of Stayton and Sublimity area residents traveling to jobs in the Salem area use the Sublimity Interchange. The primary traffic use within the interchange influence area is the location and function of access points to Cascade Highway.
The project was MWACT's first priority funding the 2008-2009 STIP selection process.
Current Status
On May 19, we celebrated the completion of the major elements of the project with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Local and state officials, and other dignitaries participated in the special event.

| Overview of Construction Elements |
|
This project will complete a partial reconstruction of the Sublimity Interchange on Oregon 22.
Construction Cost: $16 million
Project Elements
Project elements include:
- Construction of three new ramps and a retaining wall.
- Construction of over crossings at Cascade Highway and Mill Creek.
- Installation of a traffic signal on Cascade Highway.
- Installation of illumination.
Construction Impacts
Highway construction shall be performed during the day as well as at night and could cause one-lane work zone temporary traffic control.
The traffic operations goal during construction is to cause minimal delays or idle travel to the traveling public and local businesses.
All businesses will remain open while construction is ongoing.
Some of the key items/closures which will impact traffic flows:
- During the setting of the new beams for the new eastbound structure there will need to be some night closures on Cascade Highway as well. These closures are allowed between
9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. and should only take a few nights. This is anticipated to happen in early spring of 2010.
