Citizens explore safety solutions on Hwy 199
A $10 million Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) project on Redwood Highway (U.S. Highway 199) in Grants Pass is currently in development, but construction isn't scheduled until 2009.
"The plan is to come up with an alternative to safely move traffic on the interstate highway to northern California, yet still provide for local users," said ODOT Project Leader Eryca McCartin. "This section of highway from the south "Y" west to Midway, is currently designated as a Safety Corridor and has a higher than normal crash rate. It's been the scene of six fatal accidents in the past 18 months."
An Environmental Assessment will be used by ODOT to formulate project alternatives and to reach a project decision, taking into account the merits of the project and the potential impacts to the human and natural environment. The study will conclude with the selection of an alternative for implementation.
Project teams, consisting of a Citizens Advisory Committee and Project Development Team, meet the second Thursday and Friday of the month, respectively, at Rogue Community College in Grants Pass. The public is encouraged to attend.
