OTC Approves Bridge Naming

In honor of Eugene "Debbs" Potts and his 45 years of service to Oregon, the Oregon Transportation Commission unanimously approved a request to name the E. D. "Debbs" Potts Memorial Bridge on U.S. 199 over the Rogue River in Grants Pass.
The Josephine County Historical Society made the formal request to name the bridge in honor of Potts. The historical society has scheduled Potts’ birthday, Dec. 10 for the dedication ceremony, which begins at 11 a.m. The event features the unveiling of a 36" x 36" memorial plaque, constructed of bronze and surrounded by washed aggregate. The bridge is locally known as the "Third Bridge."
Potts’ service included 19 years on the Oregon Lottery Commission, five terms as a state senator from Josephine County, including three as senate president, and a term as the Grants Pass mayor.
"The community is extremely supportive. Everybody loved Debbs," said Josephine County Historical Society Director, Marilyn Luttrell. "He was a true politician in the best sense of the word. He got along with Democrats and Republicans."
The approval came during the September OTC meeting held near Newport. The OTC made an exception to its policy of not naming highway facilities after individuals because Potts made a lasting statewide contribution with a significant historic impact during his 45 years of public service.
