$2.3 Million Project Enters Final Stages
A spring and summer of road construction is entering its final stages in Gold Hill.
The Highway 234 Gold Hill reconstruction project is entering the last phase of the roadwork, with the reconstruction of 4th Street.
"When are you going to be done?" is a common refrain heard by Oregon Department of Transportation inspectors, said Bill Boyett, the department’s public service representative.
"We really appreciate people’s patience with the work," said Boyett.
Merchants have persevered and assisted with the $2.3 million construction project. At the gas station, owner Ron Benoist has even placed cups and a thermos of Gatorade to assist thirsty workers.
Boyett said contractor LTM is working on curbs, sidewalks and final paving on both 4th Street and Main Street. Since curb work is next at the gas station, Boyett worked with Benoist to make sure the station’s underground tanks had plenty of fuel before the concrete curb work begins. That way the transport would not have to travel over the curing concrete.
The current schedule calls for completion of the work by the end of this month. LTM is planning to work weekends to try to hit that schedule. Undocumented utilities, such as water and electrical lines, have delayed construction this season.
"Utility issues are major issues with any project to stay on schedule, and with these we lost some time."
Now, if weather permits, the hope is that major construction should by done by the first part of November, said Boyett.
