New North Medford Interchange bridge beams to be set Jan. 12 & 13
January 7, 2005
MEDFORD Construction work on the new North Medford Interchange will cause traffic restrictions on Interstate 5 and Highway 62 on nights of Wednesday and Thursday, January 12 and 13.
Between the hours of 8 p.m. and 7 a.m., the contractor will be placing 15 concrete girders on the Interstate 5, exit 30 overpass. The girders will be placed by crane from top of the Highway 62 overpass onto the new support structures. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained on Highway 62 during the work periods.
To do the work safely, it will be necessary to have lane restrictions and intermittent rolling slowdowns of I-5 traffic as the beams are lowered into place.
The rolling slowdowns will affect, at the same time, both north and southbound I-5 traffic. Electronic message boards will be placed on I-5 north of Central Point and south of the south Medford interchange alerting motorists of the traffic restrictions.
Just before the beams are placed over the interstate, pilot cars will slow traffic to allow the beams to safely be laid on their supports. Once secured, the pilot cars will allow traffic to proceed.
The $36 million project will make significant safety and traffic flow improvements to the east side of the I-5 interchange, which links to Crater Lake Highway (Oregon Highway 62).
