Why the Project is Needed
The Y intersection at 6th Street, OR 140 and OR 39 in Klamath Falls, Oregon, looking southeast.
The Y intersection at OR 140 and OR 39 in Klamath Falls.
The configuration of the Y junction is outdated and does not handle the current and projected volumes of traffic.  The traffic signal is obsolete and is not currently connected to the rest of the system in Klamath Falls.  The junction does not provide pedestrian and bicycle facilities (cross walks and bike lanes).  Some of the traffic islands do not have curbing which allows cars to cut across islands creating safety concerns.

The average daily traffic at the junction is 11,100 vehicles.  Between July 2008 and July 2009 there were five crashes at this intersection.

What is Planned
To address the problems, ODOT is planning to:
  • Replace the Y junction and traffic signal with a roundabout with slip lanes dedicated to right turns.
  • Add pedestrian crossings and bike lanes.
  • Work with the trucking industry to develop a “freight friendly” intersection.
  • Keep the Western Street at OR 39 connection open.
