Contractor crews working for the City of Redmond will begin water line relocation work for the OR 126: Glacier-Highland Couplet project during the week of February 23. Crews anticipate working Monday through Friday.
During the week of February 28, traffic will be shifted to the south side of OR 126 (Highland Avenue) between Rimrock Avenue and 17th Street to facilitate continued waterline work.
This waterline work is expected to continue eastbound, toward U.S. 97, in conjunction with OR 126: Glacier-Highland Couplet construction work, through November 2006.
Beginning the week of March 7, Hap Taylor and Son, Inc. construction crews, working for the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), will begin construction of detour lanes to the north of the existing OR 126 alignment (between Rimrock Avenue and 17th Street) to facilitate construction of the new pedestrian tunnel below the highway at the Dry Canyon. Contractor crews anticipate working Monday through Friday.
Traffic is anticipated to be shifted to the new detour lanes in mid-March. At this time construction of the pedestrian tunnel will begin. Pedestrian tunnel work is expected to continue in this area through May. The new pedestrian tunnel will connect Sam Johnson Park with the future Ray Johnson Park to the south.
About the OR 126: Glacier-Highland Couplet
The OR 126: Glacier-Highland Couplet project is located in Redmond on OR 126 (Highland Avenue) between Rimrock Avenue and U.S. 97, on Glacier Avenue between 14th Street and U.S. 97, and on U.S. 97 between Glacier Avenue and Highland Avenue.
The completion of the new OR 126: Glacier-Highland Couplet will alleviate traffic congestion and turning conflicts that have become a daily occurrence on Highland Avenue (OR126). In the future, Glacier and Highland Streets will become an integral piece of the state highway system. Westbound traffic will use Glacier and Highland will facilitate vehicles moving eastbound on OR126 – eliminating the serious clogging we see today on the highway.
In addition to projects designed to ease traffic conditions, ODOT and the City of Redmond are planning several beautification projects in the area to enhance community livability in Redmond. New landscaping strips and wider sidewalks, a new pedestrian under-crossing, ornamental street lighting, and added crosswalks are just a few of the improvements to come.
