The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is continuing to invest in Oregon’s future with roadway improvement projects throughout Oregon’s central region (ODOT Region 4). ODOT is committed to providing safe, efficient transportations systems. The following projects reflect ODOT’s commitment to make improvements as traffic numbers rise and to make the roadways safer and more efficient for drivers:
CROOK COUNTY
US 26 (Ochoco Highway), MP 26.4, East of Prineville
Oregon Department of Transportation drilling crews will be drilling approximately 8 miles east of Prineville on US 26 this week. Drilling work is anticipated to take place between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. During working hours, traffic will be reduced to one lane and controlled by flaggers.
US 26 (Ochoco Highway), MP 4.5 – MP 5.83, Near Powell Butte
Contractor crews are working on the highway shoulders in the Powell Butte Passing Lanes Project area this week. During blasting operations, motorists may encounter short delays traveling through this work zone.
By late summer, 2005 motorists traveling on Oregon 126 between Redmond and Prineville will be able to pass more safely using newly constructed passing lanes. This will be the second set of passing lanes constructed on the highway in as many years.
DESCHUTES COUNTY
OR 126 (McKenzie Highway), MP 111, Redmond
Contractor crews working for the City of Redmond are performing water line relocation work for the OR 126: Glacier-Highland Couplet project this week on OR 126 (Highland Avenue) between Rimrock Avenue and 17th Street. Crews anticipate working Monday through Friday.
This waterline work is expected to continue eastbound, toward U.S. 97, in conjunction with OR 126: Glacier-Highland Couplet construction work through November 2006.
OR 126 (McKenzie Highway), MP 111, Redmond
Hap Taylor and Son, Inc. construction crews, working for the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), are constructing detour lanes to the north of the existing OR 126 alignment (between Rimrock Avenue and 17th Street) to facilitate construction of the new pedestrian tunnel below the highway at the Dry Canyon. Crews will work to remove guardrail from the north side of the road, near to the Dry Canyon, this week. Contractor crews anticipate working Monday through Friday.
Traffic is anticipated to be shifted to the new detour lanes in mid-March. At this time, construction of the pedestrian tunnel will begin. Pedestrian tunnel work is expected to continue in this area through May. The new pedestrian tunnel will connect Sam Johnson Park with the future Ray Johnson Park to the south.
ODOT crews remind pedestrians that a portion of paved footpath located near the construction area has been removed to facilitate construction activities. Pedestrians are advised to seek alternate routes around the area during this construction closure.
Evergreen Avenue between SW 3rd Street and Railroad Avenue, Redmond
Evergreen Avenue between SW 3rd Street and Railroad Avenue is temporarily closed to through traffic to facilitate canal piping work in the area. Local business and residential traffic will continue to have local access during construction. Construction is expected to be completed in mid-March. Motorists are advised to use the signed detour routes to move around the area.
J W Fowler Construction crews will use the closure period to pipe a section of the Central Oregon Irrigation District (COID) canal and remove the Evergreen Avenue Bridge. Crews will perform canal-piping work during daylight hours. Some weekend and evening work may be possible. Rock crushing and painting work is expected to create intermittent noise in the area between 7am and 10pm. Travelers are encouraged to slow down and use caution when approaching this intersection.
Juniper Avenue between US97 and SW 7th Street, Redmond
Juniper Avenue, between US97 and SW 7th Street, is temporarily closed to all traffic to facilitate construction work taking place in the area. Contractors anticipate re-opening Juniper Avenue to through traffic in early March, weather permitting.
Motorists traveling southbound on US97 are encouraged to seek alternate access to the Fred Meyer shopping center during this closure period.
SW Canal Boulevard between Highland Avenue and Evergreen Avenue, Redmond
SW Canal Boulevard, between Highland Avenue and Evergreen Avenue, is temporarily closed to through traffic to facilitate canal piping work taking place in the area. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes to businesses located in this area. Contractors anticipate re-opening this stretch of roadway in mid-March.
US 97 (The Dalles – California Highway), 121.58 MP, Redmond
Motorists traveling through Redmond on US 97 near Fred Meyer will be shifted back to the original highway alignment this week. Once traffic has been rerouted, crews will work to remove the temporary traffic detour located to the west of the original highway alignment.
Crews are continuing work to pipe a section of the Central Oregon Irrigation District (COID) canal and remove the US 97 Pilot Butte Canal Bridge located between US 97 and South Canal Boulevard, near the Fred Meyer entrance. Crews will perform canal-piping work during daylight hours. Some night and weekend work may be possible. The posted speed through this construction area will be reduced to 25 mph from 45 mph. This 25 mph construction zone speed limit will be strictly enforced.
This canal piping work is expected to be completed in early March. Once completed, traffic will be returned to the existing US97 and the temporary detour will be removed.
Business 97, MP 19.82-19.86, Bend
Wildish Standard Paving Company construction crews have completed work to fill the existing space between the current Central Oregon Irrigation District and North Unit Irrigation District Canal Bridge and canal pipe with a control density fill (CDF). Crews will return to the area when evening temperatures begin to rise and become suitable for paving and striping operations to take place.
This bridge is located in Bend on Business 97 (3rd Street) near the junction of Butler Market Road and Mt. Washington Drive. This project is expected to be completed by April 1.
US 97 (The Dalles – California Highway), MP 129.77 – 129.68, between Bend & Redmond near Deschutes Market Road
Wildish Standard Paving Company is working to replace the Pilot Butte Canal Bridge, located north of Bend near Deschutes Market Road. Contractors switched traffic to the east side of the highway on January 19. Demolition of the original bridge structure was completed on January 26.
For the next several weeks, crews will be trenching and excavating in the area to prepare for the installation of a new section of culvert.
The construction speed is 45 miles-per-hour. Daytime traffic is not expected to be delayed during this construction project. Motorists traveling between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. may encounter traffic reduced to one lane in each direction.
US 97 (The Dalles – California Highway), MP 113.9, north of Terrebonne
Pile driving and embankment work is underway in the construction area. Wimp Way at US 97 in Terrebonne is temporarily closed to through traffic to facilitate replacement of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad Bridge and to ensure motorist safety during construction at this intersection The closure of Wimp Way at US 97 is anticipated to remain in place through September. Motorists are advised to use the signed detour routes to move around the area.
This bridge is located about one mile north of Terrebonne on US 97 at milepost 113.9. During the first phase of construction, crews will construct a new, two lane bridge with 10 foot shoulders to the west of the existing bridge. Traffic will remain on the existing bridge during construction. Motorists will be routed to the new bridge in fall 2005. Following this traffic switch, crews will remove the existing bridge.
Crews anticipate working Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. with intermittent night and weekend work possible.
JEFFERSON COUNTY
US 97 (The Dalles – California Highway), MP 105.4 - 109.03, South of Madras
Contractor crews have switched traffic to the new detour bridges to facilitate construction of the new bridges. Crews anticipate opening the newly completed Ochoco bridge structure located at MP 109 during the week of March 21, weather permitting. Flaggers will control motorist movements as traffic is switched to each new bridge.

These two bridges are located 12 and 16 miles south of Madras on US 97 at mileposts 105.4 and 108.9. Crews anticipate working Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. with intermittent night and weekend work possible. Motorists can expect delays of less than 5 minutes when traveling through this work zone.
US 26 (Warm Springs Highway), MP 116.36 – 116.80, West of Madras
Wildish Standard Paving Company is working to replace the existing, three lane Burlington Northern Santa Fe Rail Road Bridge, west of Madras, with a new, wider, three-lane Bridge. Crews are currently working on guardrail and removal of asphalt in order to complete embankment enhancement on the east side shoulder.
The northbound lanes were reduced from two to one on January 20. Reduction of the lanes allowed crews to begin demolition of the east side of the existing bridge. Northbound traffic will remain in one lane until the completion of the new bridge in fall 2005. Crews are currently doing clearing and embankment work on the highway shoulders in this work zone.
GILLIAM COUNTY
OR 19, MP 15 – MP 17, North of Condon
Contractors will perform excavation, rock blasting, and pipe placement work this week at the Olex Highway Improvement Project. Motorists can expect minimal lane closures with delays of less than ten minutes. The posted construction speed is 25 mph in this work zone.
The Olex Highway Improvement Project replaces a failing 82-year-old bridge that is often impassable due to flooding waters, straightens out a hairpin curve and widens portions of Oregon Highway 19 (John Day Highway).
The existing roadway is steep and narrow with several sharp curves and limited sight distance resulting in restricted freight access to the area. The realignment of the highway in this area will increase the trucking industry’s ability to transport goods and services to Gilliam County and the community of Condon from the I-84 corridor.
Contractor crews will perform clearing and grubbing operations on US 97 at MP 183 during the week of February 23. Crews anticipate working Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. with intermittent night and weekend work possible. Motorists can expect delays of less than 5 minutes when traveling through this work zone
KLAMATH COUNTY
US 97 (The Dalles-California Highway), MP 183, North of Gilchrist
Contractor crews will perform clearing and grubbing operations on US 97 at MP 183 during the week of February 23. Crews anticipate working Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. with intermittent night and weekend work possible. Motorists can expect delays of less than 5 minutes when traveling through this work zone.
The Crescent Connection bridge project is located approximately one mile north of Gilchrist on US 97. Crews will replace the existing two-lane bridge will a new two-lane structure in the months to come. Traffic will shift to a detour bridge, west of the existing structure, as the existing structure is removed and replaced.
US 97 (The Dalles – California Highway), MP 275, Klamath Falls
Crews from Hamilton Construction Company are working to replace the US 97 Bridge over California Avenue. Pile driving work is expected to create intermittent noise in the area, December 28 through February 20. The construction speed of 45 miles per hour is strictly enforced.
California Avenue is currently closed to through traffic between North 1st Street and Conger Avenue to facilitate construction of the new bridge. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes around the area. Additionally, Klamath Basin Transit will reroute bus service around the work area and temporarily remove two bus stops on California Avenue between North 1st Street and Conger Avenue during the road closure. This section of roadway is expected to be reopened in mid-April.
US 97 (Dalles - California Highway), MP 275.8, Klamath Falls
A contractor for the Oregon Department of Transportation will install new bridge beams over Green Springs Drive on U.S. 97 in Klamath Falls, milepost 275.8 this week. In order to safely place the beams, the northbound lane of U.S. 97 in the construction zone will be periodically closed throughout the week. Flaggers will control both directions of traffic with alternating use of the southbound lane. Motorists should expect delays of up to ten minutes when traveling through this area. Dates and approximate times of the traffic control are listed below.
· Monday, Feb. 28: The northbound lane of U.S. 97 will be closed from 8 a.m. to noon
· Tuesday, March 1 through Thursday, March 3: The northbound lane of U.S. 97 will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day
· Friday, March 4: The northbound lane of U.S. 97 will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Motorists are advised to anticipate delays of less than 20 minutes when traveling through this work zone. The construction speed of 45 miles per hour is strictly enforced.
US 97 (Dalles - California Highway), MP 200.3 - 202.3, North of Chemult
JAL Construction crews anticipate resuming construction activities at the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) Bridge Replacement Project and Passing Lanes Project in Chemult during the week of March 14. Work is expected to take place Monday through Friday, from 6: 00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with some intermittent night and weekend work. In the event night work is required, flaggers will control motorist’s movement.
US 97, (Dalles – California Highway), MP 240.55 to MP 267.08 Spring Creek Hill to North Shady Pine Road Bridge Work, North of Klamath Falls
Contractors working for the Oregon Department of Transportation anticipate performing surveying, bridgework, concrete barrier placement and roadwork in the Spring Creek Hill to North Shady Pine Road bridgework area this week, weather permitting. Motorists can expect minor delays. Traffic will be controlled by flaggers as needed.
Crews are working to repair or replace the Spring Creek Bridge (US 97, MP 244), North Chiloquin Interchange Bridge (US 97, MP 247.54), Barkley Springs Irrigation Canal Bridge (US 97, MP 263.11), and Algoma Log Pond Bridge (US 97, MP 265.65).
OR 39 (Hatfield Highway), MP 1.46, Near Malin
Contractor crews are working to replace the Drainage Ditch Culvert Bridge located at milepost 1.46 near Malin. Contractor crews anticipate completing major construction activities this week.
Work will take place in the area Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. with intermittent night and weekend work possible. Motorists can expect delays of less than 5 minutes when traveling through this work zone.
WASCO COUNTY
I-84, MP 84, The Dalles
Traffic on I-84 has been reduced to one lane in each direction at mile point 83.5 in The Dalles. Crews anticipate paving, moving concrete barrier and performing bridge demolition in the project area this week. Traffic is anticipated to be shifted to the westbound lanes of the interstate this week to facilitate replacement of the eastbound side of the Webber Street Bridge.
The entire project is expected to be completed by May 2005. The posted construction speed of 45 MPH is strictly enforced.
