Based on weather forecasts, the Oregon Department of Transportation has moved the deadline for removing studded tires to midnight on Monday, April 11. Therefore, studded tires cannot be legally used on April 12 and thereafter until Nov. 1.

Drivers with studded tires on their vehicles after the deadline can be charged with a class “C” traffic violation, which carries a base fine of $141.

An estimated $11 million is spent each year repairing studded tire damage on city streets, county roads and state highways, according to Luci Moore, ODOT Maintenance engineer. ODOT asks anyone not planning to travel through mountainous areas to abide voluntarily by the original April 1 deadline.

The Washington State Department of Transportation has made the same deadline extension. Both state DOTs have coordinated with their state police agencies.
