Contractor crews working for the Oregon Department of Transportation will perform paving operations for the future installation of Green Light pre-clearance, weigh-in-motion scales on US 97, south of the Bend Weigh Station, on Friday, April 8. Crews will close the southbound slow lane on US 97 at mile point 147 between 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 8 to facilitate this work.

During the week of April 11, crews will reduce northbound traffic to one lane near MP 147 on US 97 to facilitate installation of the Green Light weigh-in-motion mechanism onto the roadway. This project is expected to be completed by May 31.

Motorists are advised to slow down and be aware of construction personnel when traveling through this area.

About the Green Light
Oregon opened the first Green Light weigh station pre-clearance site in October 1997. The Green Light Program allows trucks to avoid stopping at weigh stations by collecting vehicle weight, height, identification number, and other data as they pass weigh-in-motion scales and transponder readers installed on the highway.

Transponders inside the trucks transmit the vehicle ID information and then receive a ‘go’ or ‘stop’ signal from the pre-clearance system about a quarter-mile ahead of the weigh station. In most cases, the driver will get a green light, indicating they do not need to stop. A red light tells the driver to pull into the scale for a formal weigh-in.

The Bend station will be the 22nd Green Light pre-clearing site in Oregon. More than 5-million trucks have used Oregon’s Green Light Weigh Station Pre-clearance Program since its inception in October 1997.

The ODOT Motor Carrier Transportation Division is distributing free transponders that can be used in Oregon and enrolled in any other pre-clearance system in the country. Truckers who want to avoid stopping at weigh stations should call (503) 378-6054 to order a free transponder.
