Motorists should plan ahead and expect delays during Memorial Day Weekend
With the first long weekend after a snowy winter, Central Oregon residents are eager to get outdoors or go visit friends around Memorial Day. But with the hopes of nice weather, comes the possibility of delays and congestions as travelers hit the highways throughout the state. The Oregon Department of Transportation and law enforcement officials are recommending that travelers be patient, slow down, leave plenty of room between them and other vehicles and allow additional travel time for unexpected delays.
Construction season is also in full swing, meaning drivers should be aware of work zones throughout the state. While most construction activities are suspended during the long holiday weekend, lanes may be narrower in work zones and speed limits may be lowered. Fines are double in work zones, whether or not workers are present.
Before you take to the highway, here’s some things to remember to keep your adventure fun and safe:
· Carry a map. Visit www.TripCheck.com before you leave to find road conditions, rest areas and mileage calculator
· If you’re heading over a mountain pass, make sure you have a full tank of gas.
· Make sure your car has an emergency kit, complete with first aide, water, food, jumper cables, flares and a charged cell phone.
