The Oregon Department of Transportation seeks volunteers for the Klamath and Lake counties Adopt-A-Highway Program. Individuals or groups are encouraged to sign up to take care of two mile sections along 500 miles of highways in the area.

Nearly 45 volunteer groups take care of 104 miles of roads in the area, but 396 miles of highways in Klamath and Lake counties are in need of volunteer care.

Adopt-A-Highway was started state-wide in 1991 to allow citizens who are concerned with Oregon’s environment an opportunity to control litter and improve the appearance of the state highway system.

“Adopt-A-Highway saves the state money and keeps Oregon clean. The work of volunteers saves ODOT from hiring a crew to clean those sections of the roads,” said Laura Spendolini, ODOT Adopt-A-Highway Coordinator for District 11.  “It’s a great way for people to give back to the community and have ownership in the beauty of the state.”

Individuals or groups commit to taking care of their section of the road for two years, picking up litter at least four separate days a year. Participants must be age 16 or older and receive training prior to beginning litter pick up. ODOT provides the training, portable signs, safety vests, litter bags, hazardous waste flags, and disposal of the garbage. Permanent Adopt-A-Highway acknowledgement signs are installed after the group’s initial litter pickup.
