Delays: US 97 Chemult Passing Lanes Project
Contractor crews will begin paving work at the US 97 Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) Passing Lanes Project, north of Chemult on Wednesday, June 8. During paving operations, traffic will be reduced to one lane intermittently at each end of the project area with motorist movements controlled by flaggers. Work is expected to take place Wednesday, June 8 through Friday, June 10 between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. with delays of up to nine minutes anticipated.
Shoulder work will continue with intermittent lane closures from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the remainder of the project. Crews anticipate opening the new four-lane road to traffic in mid-June. In the event night work is required, flaggers will control motorist’s movement.
US 97 Chemult Passing Lanes
Crews began construction of north and southbound passing lanes on US 97 near Chemult, in Sept 2004 in conjunction with the UPRR Bridge Replacement project. Motorists are reminded to slow down, use caution, and expect shoulder closures with abrupt edges during construction of these lanes.
These $4.6 million projects are included in a $30.5 million contract awarded to Wildish to replace 11 bridges on US 26, US 97 and Oregon 224. The OTIA III State Bridge Delivery Program is part of the Oregon Department of Transportation's 10-year Oregon Transportation Investment Act (OTIA) program. During the next decade, OTIA will repair or replace hundreds of bridges, pave and maintain city and county roads, improve and expand interchanges, add new capacity to Oregon's highway system, and remove freight bottlenecks statewide. About 18 family-wage jobs are sustained for every $1 million spent on transportation construction in Oregon. Each year during the OTIA program, construction projects will sustain about 5,000 family-wage jobs.
